"They are pretty good but then it's been a good summer for them," he said.
"They gained a lot of momentum from the Test series against us and the Pakistan series.
The Windies have been awful in the ODI series and Gayle admits some of the younger players have not done themselves justice.
He added: "We are missing quite a few key players but this was a perfect opportunity for the younger players to come in.
"This is what cricket is all about, it's a challenge."
Windies coach David Williams insisted his team will put in an improved performance in the two T20 internationals, in Hobart on Sunday and Sydney on Tuesday.
"We have got a good record against Australia, we are two zip against them so we are pretty confident in the shorter version of the game," he said.
"We do have guys that can destroy an attack (in Twenty20 matches) such as (Kieron) Pollard, (Dwayne) Smith and Chris Gayle so it's going to be good fun."
