The express pace of Australian bowlers Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes and Johnson, something New Zealand had not encountered in their series against Pakistan and Bangladesh, was too much for the Black Caps to handle as they crumbled to 118 all out in their 20 overs.
Australia reached their target of 119 runs with 24 balls to spare and Johnson, who finished with three for 19 off his four overs, felt the win had set the tone for the rest of the five-week tour.
"Obviously it's good to have a win first up, especially the way we did it," the left-arm quick said.
"We did pretty well bowling-wise and in the field, even though we dropped a couple of catches, we took some pretty good ones as well. We did pretty well with the bat there as well and hopefully all that will be in their mind for the next game (on Sunday)."
