The Brazilian goalkeeper, who has impressed this season between the sticks for Roma, had to taken off just before halftime during Thursday's Europa League clash against Panathinaikos. Roma lost that game 3-2.
Earlier reports had suggested that Sergio was confident to be out for just a week, but a further scan carried out by the club's medical staff showed the injury to be worse than first thought.
A statement released on Roma's website read: "The results have shown a strain to the adductor muscle in his right thigh.
"His condition will be re-evaluated over the coming days, and he will begin a rehabilitative programme today."
Sergio's return has been scheduled for March 6 when Roma face a crunch test against AC Milan.
