The Foxes won the trophy in 1997 - helped by a young Emile Heskey - against Middlesbrough after a replay and in 2000 at Tranmere's expense as well as being runners-up in 1999 to Tottenham.
O'Neill knows how much belief that kind of success gave to the Leicester players and knows it would be a similar scenario at Villa circa 2010.
He said: "As a player (at Nottingham Forest) and manager, I've managed to win this competition. At Leicester when we won the first trophy, it really was great.
"We needed a replay at Hillsborough to beat Middlesbrough after Emile (Heskey) scored a late goal in the first game at Wembley.
"It was a great feeling for everyone at the club, not just the manager. The players were particularly excited by it and, obviously the fans. It is great to win something.
