The Mirror reported that United sent scouts to catch Veloso in action in the Europa League match against Everton on Tuesday.
This will not be the first time Ferguson has targeted the Portuguese international as he has been on Fergie's radar for many years.
Veloso who is only 23 years of age can play as a defender as well as a defensive anchorman.
Speaking to a Portuguese sports newspaper, United assistant manager Mike Phelan said: "We know Veloso well, including from the time he played against us. He is an excellent midfielder, with great potential."
