"Well, we've 10 league games and hopefully we'll get six European ties. That's 16 games," Ferguson told The Sun newspaper.
"A goal a game would bring him to 43. So there's pressure for you.
"Who wouldn't thrive on that? Crikey me! He's on a great goalscoring burst now.
"He's popping up in the right places at the right time.
"His judgement in the penalty box is improving and that's a nice sign."
Rooney may not, however, get a chance to add to his tally during Sunday's Carling Cup final against Aston Villa, as Ferguson, with one eye on the near future, is considering resting his prized asset.
